It’s clear that the cellphone is the focus of so much relationship drama here in the Philippines, at least anecdotally. Not really a surprise, since the cellphone has become an integral part of numerous Filipinos, even those technically living below the poverty line. Why else would a popular question be “Why Won’t He (or She) [...]

Our mobile-driven culture is the kind that gives rise to a particularly type of story, like The Curious Case of the SIM Breaker.

The Curious Case of the SIM Breaker

Mr. X was deeply paranoid about his girlfriend’s fidelity. Ironic, given his own track record for blatant unfaithfulness. Browsing through his girlfriend’s text messages, what he saw in the Inbox and Sent Items apparently outraged him.

So what did Mr. X do? He immediately shut off his girlfriend’s phone, took the SIM out, and snapped it in half. Declaring that his woman was texting too many people or the wrong individuals—which was true was never clear—Mr. X demanded to pay for the cost of a new SIM. His girlfriend after all, was using a prepaid account.

The Angry Gossip Girl

Ms. Y had a very happy relationship with her boyfriend, even taking the time to make a special scrapbook filled with their happy memories for him. All the while she was blissfully aware of her significant other’s infidelity. The degree of unfaithfulness was never made clear, but at the very least, text messages were sent to certain people, exposing interest in a more-than-platonic relationship.

So the boyfriend was lying—again. Ms. Y found out this much while browsing through her boyfriend’s phone as he was busy in the bathroom. She finally had enough, and used the mobile to compose an SMS, identifying herself, naming her now-ex as a cheat and liar. Then she sent it to everyone on her boyfriend’s contact list before putting down the phone and walking out for good.

How many times has your significant other, lover, or spouse asked to read through your cellphone?
