Multiply Tries to Cater More to Filipinos

At the very least Multiply is aware of their significant Filipino user-base. Here’s a recent email newsletter from the social networking site detailing additional services available in the Philippines.

I’ll just post the announcements verbatim, since the descriptions are comprehensive and concise anyway. For the following links to work, you need to be logged into your Multiply account:

The New Friendster Ad, Causing Head-Scratching Since Last Week

Sorry Friendster. I know you’re trying to differentiate yourself from the Facebook juggernaut, to reclaim your lost social networking glory. But your ad promoting the site’s revamp shows you’re playing catch-up.

See the ad for yourself:

You’re claiming to be something that’s “simple, personal, and fun”. But Facebook already has those covered, which is why that site is on the ban list of corporate admins worldwide.

What about those screenshots? From the stream of contact updates, it looks like you’re trying to copy Facebook, something that wasn’t lost on those who commented on your ad. Boasting about games like The Farmer and a gift-giving function—already available on Facebook—doesn’t really help your case.

And did we really have to wait this long for you to finally improve your media-sharing capabilities? People have posted entire albums (the visual and audio kind) on Multiply for years now. And they do too on (you guessed it) Facebook.

To be fair, I haven’t tried out the revamped friendster.com. Still, you should reconsider pulling the ad, as it doesn’t do a good job of winning converts. Based on my first impression, I really don’t feel like visiting the new site now. I’ll try it out eventually, if only to satisfy my curiousity—when I have the time.

Volunteer and Help Move Goods from DSWD Warehouse

Rather than just writing about relief goods allegedly “rotting” in the DSWD warehouse, I decided to do something about it.

That’s why I volunteered here. Gang Badoy and Rock Ed Philippines is organizing shifts of volunteers to pack relief goods and move them from the warehouse, which has become infamous over the past few days. Anyone going there this Tuesday evening? See you!

Isn’t it amazing how the internet makes it easy for anyone to rally around a good cause? I found out about the volunteer effort through Gang’s posting on Multiply, then volunteered by calling up her personal assistant, Leslie Umali, at her cell phone number: +639177346742. Yay Team Internet!

Alleged Death Threats Made by Miguel Osmeña Detailed Online

Miguel Osmeña carries the name of a mayor, senator, and even a president. Maybe that’s why his alleged act of violence against a certain Samantha “Sam” Elise Benitez—reportedly involving a gun—is gaining attention online, spreading like wildfire.

Here’s Sam’s purported side of the story, shared by RockED personality Gang Badoy on Multiply. Sam apparently posted her story on her Facebook account, including photos of a bullet lodged in her Sony Cybershot:

“I was drinking with some friends and i invited my friend Bea. She got really drunk and her boyfriend Miguel Osmena blamed me. and since bea had my camera he took it and shot it. F*cked up. This was hanging from my gate na by the time i got home last night.”

According to Gang, Sam then received a text message from Miguel, threatening that “Next time that has to happen Sam, the bullet goes through your head.”

Miguel’s pedigree is probably a big factor behind the spread of his alleged act online. He is, after all, the son of Tomas Osmeña, mayor of Cebu City, the nephew of former Senator Sergio Osmeña III, and the great grandson of Sergio Osmeña, the second president of the Commonwealth of the Philippines.

Now, before people go around typing his name and screaming how he has shamed his family and violated Republic Act 9262, I hope they learn how to type “ñ” on the computer! That’s holding down Alt while typing 2,4,1 on Windows PCs (make sure Num Lock is on), and pressing Ctrl+N, N on Macs.

Seriously though, whether or not this alleged incident reaches mainstream media, resulting in either a useless political circus or a genuinely thorough investigation, scratch one for the internet’s ability to spread information around! This is another reason why the Ombudsman should make SALNs available online.

In any case, poor camera! It’s always painful to see a gadget meet it’s untimely and intentional end.

The Worst Multiply Post Ever?

So the apparently carefree jeffyrosete published a blog post last August 3, entitled Stash Those Yellow Ribbons Away. Mofos. The money quote:

OK nga si Marcos eh, nabigyan niya ng disiplina ang mga tao, oo hindi maiwasan ang mga kriminal sa paligid, anjan naman sila palagi eh, parang guardian angel, pero ibang trabaho nga lang. Pero still, you get my point. Kaso wala, binaboy ni Cory (Babay Cory hahahaha magsama kayo ni Cardinal Sin. HAHAHA sa langit ka nga ba talaga pupunta??? Hihi.)

Multiply Rolls Out Posting via SMS

I’m not sure when this happened, but here it is:

I’m very pleased to announce a useful new feature — available for all Multiply members in the Philippines — that helps make mobile sharing even easier: Posting via MMS.

Getting started is simple; just visit the mobile setup page and enter your prefix and mobile phone number. Then, follow the simple directions to start posting and sharing content to Multiply… from wherever you happen to be.

This service is currently available to all Sun and Smart Telecom subscribers, but we’re working to get more providers on board.

Isn’t it irritating how there’s no time for Christmas-shopping nowadays, since you’re busy finishing your workload for the year? Thanks to social-networking technology—Multiply in particular—Filipinos can shop without having to leave their home (or office).

Two particular Multiply sellers have caught my attention recently, as they offer a wide selection of items for a variety of gift-giving needs, especially for female recipients

fashionmanila – Let’s see… shoes, bags, accessories, and even a laptop? fashionmanila has over a hundred pages worth of products on display, probably justifying its tagline as the “ph based sellers directory”.

shopaholics00 – Enjoys attention for its promised “NO NEED TO WAIT ITEMS” collection. This seller should’ve just stopped referring people to melondrops for pricing and description info, and just make them available on shopaholics00 itself.
