The top schools in the Philippines for 2011

Four years ago, our list of the top schools in the Philippines for 2007 (according to CHED) caused quite a stir. It’s proven a particularly sensitive topic, especially to alumni who feel obligated to defend the honor of their alma mater. How have the rankings changed in the last four years?

While we’d love to feature updated rankings from CHED, the government agency hasn’t released any new list in the past few years. So for this edition of our top schools list, we’re relying on figures published by QS Top Universities. The website, maintained by Quacquarelli Symonds Limited, regularly ranks universities worldwide based on a specific set of criteria, claiming to help prospective undergraduate and graduate students choose the right school for their needs.

Only 13 universities from the Philippines made the site’s 2011 Asian University Rankings.

Institution Ranking Score
University of the Philippines 62= 58.10
Ateneo de Manila University 65 57.20
University of Santo Tomas 104 47.10
De La Salle University 107 45.90
University of Southeastern Philippines 201+ 18.70
Silliman University 201+ 18.50
Xavier University 201+ 16.40
University of San Carlos 201+ 14.00
Central Mindanao University 201+ 13.60
Adamson University 201+ 10.40
Saint Louis University 201+ 10.00
Father Saturnino Urios College 201+ 6.20
Mindanao State University 201+ 5.70

UP – tied with National Taiwan University of Science And Technology (formerly National Taiwan Institute of Technology)
UST – tied with National Taiwan Normal University

For some reason the rankings are different when you look at each university’s world ranking from 2010. Many of the institutions listed above don’t even have a rank on the worldwide stage, while ADMU is higher than UP. All N/A ranks are sorted by institution name.

Institution World Ranking
Ateneo de Manila University 307
University of the Philippines 314
De La Salle University 451-500
University of Santo Tomas 551-600
Adamson Univeristy N/A
Ateneo de Davao University
Central Mindanao University
Father Saturnino Urios College
Mapua Institute of Technology
Mindanao State University
Polytechnic University of the Philippines
Saint Louis University
Silliman University
University of San Carlos
University of Southeastern Philippines
Xavier University

We expect the lists to generate their own “Ha! My school is better than yours!” arguments soon.
