Sony VAIO Z Series: Really Portable, Really Powerful, Really Expensive

So what do you get when you cram a pretty powerful processor and graphics hardware into a laptop that’s 1.29″ thick (at most)? Why, Sony’s new VAIO Z series of course.

The local price of this new laptop line is so high that there’s no need to be specific about it. “P150,000″ already gives a clear idea of how much you’ll need to spend on this baby. Here’s a summary of what an auto loan down-payment gets you:

Even before I found out about the price however, I thoroughly enjoyed the Z series’ speed. The laptop has an SSD, which is basically like a very high-capacity flash drive, and this allows the fast loading of applications and file transfers. The keyboard didn’t feel cheap, and was easy to type on. Within minutes I was touch-typing the post covering the laptop’s launch yesterday, and the generously-sized track pad made it easy to move the mouse pointer around with precision.

The laptop’s body, molded from a solid block of aluminum (sounds familiar, doesn’t it?) was very rigid, and very light. It really felt like, given the Z series relatively thin size and lack of heft, I could throw it across the room like a frisbee.

Hopefully Sony will lend me a unit to review (I can only hope). Based on my first impressions however, I can say that whoever buys the new Sony VAIO Z series laptop will tremendously enjoy the powerful specs of this machine—or cry over how much was spent in the pursuit of power and portability.
