Sony Cyber-Shot TX1: Battery Life

Sometimes portability can work against a gadget. With barely enough space for a battery, how long does the Sony Cyber-shot TX1 on a single charge? The quick answer: enough for an entire day trip.

02122009452It’s harder to gauge the battery life of a camera. Unlike gadgets like cell phones or laptops, a camera isn’t constantly on, with power leaving the battery only during brief spells of operation. Nevertheless, seeing “620mAh” (mAh means milliampere-hours, a common way of measuring a battery’s capacity) printed on the TX1′s NP-BD1 Lithium-Ion battery worried me a bit. As a point of comparison, the N97 mini uses a 1200mAh battery, while a 6-cell laptop battery provides 4400mAh of power on average.

But again, a camera—a point-and-shoot at that—isn’t as demanding as those gadgets, and the TX1 makes use of its battery’s limited capacity. My first trip to the beach with the camera saw me snapping pictures constantly over an 8-hour period, making full use of the camera’s video, macro, and panorama features.

The battery lasted until night-time, despite the use of flash for tens of shots. Unfortunately, having failed to recharge the camera as I slept, it died within the first hour of use during the next day. In other words, the TX1 has enough power for a party. Yet after bouts of frequent use, the battery needs immediate recharging.

Speaking of charging times, according to the manual, the Cyber-shot TX1′s battery will last for a total of 180 minutes, or around 350 shots. What’s weird though is completely charging the battery will require 230 minutes—almost an hour more than the camera’s lifespan on a full charge!

Ultimately, there’s no need to worry if the Sony Cyber-shot TX1 will make it through your kid’s arduously long graduation, or that memorable date night. However, battery life isn’t above average. Once you’re done for the day with the camera, it’s best to recharge it for tomorrow.
