On The Gadget Blog last week, I wrote about a laptop reliability study that crowned Asus king, Toshiba it’s queen, and Sony the prince. At the other end are Acer, Gateway, and HP.
The brands as ranked by SquareTrade’s study:
- Asus
- Toshiba
- Sony
- Apple
- Dell
- Lenovo
- Acer
- Gateway
- HP
Visual aids (click thumbnails for full-size version):
As you can see, the following trends are clear:
- The more expensive a laptop, the more reliable it is
- 1 out of 3 laptops totally fail after 3 years
- 5.8% of Netbooks—the cheapest category surveyed—fail within the first year
- 1 out of 4 netbooks malfunction (not totally fail) after 3 years of use

I don’t know. We don’t know anything from the consumer products people. We’re in the services kasi eh. New products and product launches aren’t communicated to us either.

This has got to be a joke, I own an Asus laptop and its hinge keeps breaking down, they are also heat magnets + service for Asus is really really bad, it take more than a month to get a hinge cover replaced.
