Rule of Writing Online #8

When using photos from someone else for your article—if you’re allowed to in the first place—credit the source. At the very least, you can explicitly mention the site where you got the photos, and it’s better to link to the source.

It’s really bad if you not only not credit the source, but modify the photos! And example is the “chic and stylish blog” of Lyndsay Cabildo (who ripped pics from  flaircandy.com and added her own text).

Update: Lyndsay finally took the pictures down

How does this Lyndsay look like? Here’s a picture of her:

Amazingly, Lyndsay thinks it’s the obligation of those who own the photographs to tell her not to use them:

Update: So we got word from Hannah of flaircandy.com, the owner of the photos, that she contacted Lyndsay, pero “dinedma“. Tsk tsk tsk!

In my defense, the disclaimer says exactly the same although emphasizing what do you want to emphasize will always be upto the writer. All I know Is that I admit I have used Hannahs photos and deleted it to her request. And I explained what truly happened as I noticed she have 2 messages to delete her photos from my blog.

    “Hi Hannah,

First of all I would like to apologize for late reply as I am on the road right now. Perhaps my apology about the photos is not that late to be heard.

I have deleted your photos on my blog as you requested, I know it has been so impolite doing that, although it wasn’t supposed to be permanent as I am just waiting for my friend’s permitted reef walking videos.

Unfortunately, I truly forgotten bec I have been on the run for while….

Thanks and have a great day!

    Regards,
    Lyndsay”

In reply, she did acknowledge the letter and got the photos removed.

There is no harm with what I did, and I myself, as a blogger, truly know that putting up photos on the net means possibility of being used by other bloggers for the same reason we need photos on our blog.

Just like this photo of mine you used (FYI: You are displaying the trait of person you are defying for this blog and I reckon yours is intentional to harm.) I didn’t mean to offend Hannah at all. I understand where is she coming from, but not you. Possibly you are coming from the side of a loyal friend without seeing things in an open mind position.

I hope this would compensate your rage, with what you think I did with Hannah(maybe more than what you think it was).

Thank you and Hope you have a Great Day!

    Regards,
    Lyndsay

I didn’t write this out of rage. You didn’t publicize the comment I made on lyndsaycabildo.com, pointing out that Hannah would appreciate a link as credit. You already knew what you did before Hannah even contacted you directly, by disapproving my comment when it appeared in your moderation queue.

I didn’t publicize your comment for the reason that I would like to reply directly to the person involved, to Hannah, who too messaged me twice.

    Regards,
    Lyndsay

You don’t get it, Lyndsay. Any photo owner shouldn’t have to contact you and ask you to remove his or her photos.

You are legally obligated to not use the photo UNTIL you get the owner’s permission.
