Amazon Opens Store in Manila!

Amazon made a name for itself selling books online, but it seems they’ve opened a brick-and-mortar store here in the Philippines! Seriously though, can you say trademark infringement?

To be honest though, I’m not sure if “Amazon Computer” got permission from Jeff Bezos and co. to use the online bookstore’s logo as signage, but here are some pics of the storefront, located on the 4th floor of The Annex, SM North EDSA:

Ok fine, it’s not exactly like Amazon’s logo, which lacks an arc above the text:

But there’s no doubting the similarity—allowed or otherwise.

I unfortunately didn’t have time to enter the store and ask the staff about the logo (it’s hell driving all the way from Parañaque to the end of EDSA, and after the Windows 7 launch event I wanted to leave ASAP). If you frequent The Annex however, feel free to investigate and share your findings below.

I think Amazon.com has the trademark for bookstores and online stores only and not computer shops. Trademarks are tied to an industry so that you can have Apple(TM) computers and Apple(TM) juice drinks if there was one.

But likeness and logos are a different issue. Apple is notorious for suing companies with apple-shaped logos form schools to supermarkets.

If this company is not related to Amazon.com, they are in trouble. This is against the copyright law

@KAiser: They’re in trouble for trademark, not copyright. There’s a difference.
