Sony Cyber-shot TX1: Night Shots

A large part of Sony’s marketing campaign pushing the Cyber-shot TX1 involves touting the camera as an able performer under low-light conditions. That’s why the first test shots taken with the camera were parts of The Fort at night. Here are some of them.

All shots were taken with the camera set to Intelligent Auto mode and flash off. The camera’s performance under low-light conditions was very impressive—at least for a relative photography newbie like me. Somehow the camera was able to light up areas that were nearly dark to the naked eye. Go to the area around McDonald’s in the Fort (the one with drive-thru) at night; you’ll see what I mean.

The TX1 also features another mode, Handheld Twilight, that basically takes six photos in quick succession and compiles them into one. As far as my freelance photographer friend can tell, what the camera does is automate the high dynamic range imaging process (HDR). HDR involves capturing the same frame at least three times, at three different exposure levels (under-, over-, and normal), and using the details from these pictures to create a properly-exposed final image. Here’s a picture taken with Handheld Twilight:

Despite these low-light capabilities, the camera will still have a hard time capturing moving objects clearly. And not keeping your hands still while taking shots may cause slight blurring. Still, for users who’d rather not worry about the technicalities of low-light shooting (other than keeping the shot still), the TX1 does a great job.
