Micro USB Universal Phone Charger Standard Approved by the UN

A new standard on mobile phone charger has been approved by the International Telecommunications Union or ITU, a branch of the United Nations.
This move is to cut waste on production of chargers as different mobile phone manufacturers uses different standards. A Universal Charging Solution (UCS) is what they approved of. So instead of using different types of plugs for different phone models from different manufacturers, all will adopt to the UCS using MicroUSB.
According to a source, this new standard could have saved 51,000 tons of waste if it were in place today.
Manufacturers should adopt to the standard by 2012.
I personally think this is a good solution. Instead of having multiple chargers for different mobile phones, you can have just one for all since they do exactly the same thing, charge the battery of the phone. Why people didn’t think of this before?
