Beer Below Zero: 5 Things You Didn’t Know

Maybe you’ve tried out beer that’s benefited from the Beer Below Zero (BBZ) process. At over 80 establishments throughout the country, BBZ keeps the beer cold enough to drink, but not too much that it freezes. Definitely a great way to get drunk! Here are five facts you may not know about this inuman-friendly technology.

It’s Proudly Filipino

Beer Below Zero is the brainchild of three men from Pili, Camarines Sur. President Luigi C. Nuñez is the charismatic president, marketer and the idea guy. Big chinito Vinson Co Say takes care of operations and is the guinea pig/tester. Jay-jay Angala was not present at the PR-oriented media lunch, saving him from one-sentence biographical representations. It’s fitting these guys are from the Bicol region, since people there drink alcohol like it’s water.

It’s Friendly to the Environment

Without revealing too much, Luigi said that the specialized BBZ chest freezer doesn’t require ice (meaning it doesn’t use water), and consumes relatively little power. That’s why a planned tie-up with the WWF (the environmental protection organization, not the sports entertainment company) is in the works.

It’s What Women Like

According to Luigi, a random sweep of BBZ-supported establishments—marketed as Ground Zero Sites—revealed a large number (around 50%) of BBZ’s frequent customers are women. To paraphrase Nuñez, women like their beer cold, while all men care about is that they have beer to drink.

It Makes Easy Beer Slush Possible

Over lunch, Nuñez showed me a neat trick: hold the bottle then tap the side of it firmly with a spoon or anything hard (not strong enough to break the bottle, of course). Thanks to physics, the beer will start expanding and crystallize when you pour out of the bottle into a glass. Instant beer slush!

It’s Original

The proprietary process is an original invention of the three men above mentioned above. So of course they want to protect it, submitting a patent last year. But aside from making sure their hard work will make them money, the people behind BBZ also want their technology, if it gains international acceptance, to be known as Filipino in origin.

Woah, so much goes into it, eh? Well, good to see a Pinoy product gain success. I personally don’t like my beer that cold, because I can’t taste it. I think there’s only a certain temperature that beer is perfect and it, for me, is far from extremely cold. Chilled beer is good by me, but then again, that’s probably why I have this liver problem thing.
