Butch Dalisay Offers Online Evidence for Supreme Court National Artist Case

The Supreme Court has weighed in on the National Artist controversy, issuing a restraining order preventing Malacañang from declaring the newest batch of National Artists, pending review of the selection process. Butch Dalisay thinks someone’s trying to pull a fast one online in an attempt to sway the high court’s evaluation.

butch_dalisayDalisay, who apparently has too much time on his hands, had enough foresight to save a copy of this page—as it appeared a month ago when the whole brouhaha started—here (link will start a download; rename the file once it’s saved on your computer).

Those who are tech-savvy enough to download and rename the file, and compare both versions of the page, and will see that someone in the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) basically inserted a mention of Executive Order No. 236, a change made clear by the use of prominent red text, into the rules governing how a National Artist is selected.

The whole point of this sneaky exercise, according to Dalisay, is to discredit critics who insist that something called the Honors Committee “never figured in the selection process before”, by making it seem like the Honors did figure in the selection process. Get It?

Regardless of what the rules are, all I know is that there’s something really wrong when you choose someone too lazy to describe a scene as a National Artist for the Visual Arts.

In any case, Mr. Dalisay, is it too much to ask that you tell the Philippine Star to use TinyURL next time? I read your article on yesterday’s edition of the paper, where the URLs of the changed page and the original copy were spelled out completely. Definitely not suitable for print, especially when the publisher can’t be bothered to use actual links in the online version of your article. At least you were sensible enough.
