Online Petition Against Carlo J. Caparas National Artist Naming

no-to-carlo-caparasLast Thursday saw the naming of new National Artists, among them Carlo J. Caparas. Reaction varied from disbelief to shock, the latter represented by an online petition attempting to gather enough names to protest Caparas’ appointment.

The petition, found here, criticizes the naming of Carlo J. Caparas as a National Artist for Visual Arts and Film. While it recognizes “the work and accomplishments of Caparas within the comic book industry as well as television and film, the petition also wonders how “someone who has made a living exploiting the lowest common denominator in films” was able to get the honor.

The petition also points out Caparas’ apparent lack of Visual Arts contribution, asserting that he was a comic writer, not an illustrator as covered under the guidelines in naming a National Artist for the Visual Arts.

This online drive also voices a common argument against Caparas’ appointment, a particular point that also makes critics of President GMA froth in the mouth:

Our objection and resolve are strengthened by news that have recently come to light that Carlo J. Caparas did not go through the rigorous selection and assesment process of the National Artists voting board. Carlo J. Caparas is a SNAG, or “Singit National Artist ni Gloria”. It is through this Presidential insertion process that a person who is not qualified to be National Artist manages to be one.

What do you think? Personally, I’m not that familiar with the works of Caparas—and many other local artists. Though I’m sure his reputation as the director of sensationally-titled films like Lipa Arandia Massacre (Lord Deliver Us from Evil)—and the naming of executive director of the commission selecting National Artists as a National Artist—definitely doesn’t help his case.

It is clear that awards coming from our nation have become nothing more than a political stunt. So who’s next? Willie Revillame for Musical Arts and Film?

    Oh i forgot:

    Guidote-Alvarez = walang delikadesa

I agree with Stralight. Ang dapat i-petition ay si Gloria. Kasi sya ang nag-award. Hehehe.

I suggest Bobby Enriquez and Joey Ayala for Music

Very low quality at talagang horible, terible sobra.

yes, carlo caparas can not be called a national artist. im sure chavit singson was one of those who submitted his name, because carlo caparas made a movie of his life. remember the movie of cecar montano(flop movie).chavit is very super close to GMA….isnt it funny? our leaders are just using their power for “bayaran ng utang na loob”.

Politics in the Philippines suck. We are stuck with a president who tries to be charming, but who has a corrupted nature within. She shouldn’t have meddled in the Arts. I agree super tasteless yung mga massacre films niya, and his comic characters were just patterned from western ones.

The movie that was Directed & produced by Carlo J was “The Life Story of Chavit Singson” the former governor of ilocos sur, who is very close to GMA. because he was the one who exposed the “hweteng scam”..in short, Erap got corruption charges & Im peachment. Then GMA got the position… GMA has utang loob to Chavit. And Chavit has utang na loob to Carlo J….so, it connects.

Cecar Montano played a role of Chavit Singson in the movie.it was a flopped movie, that’s why many people dont know about it.

I just hope that they could put back the integrity and sincerity of choosing a true and deserving National Artist in our country that GMA has ruined…

Mr. Carlo Caparas has a talent. God gave him that, but he must use it in a humble way…its just a “title & money”…. real talent shoud be shared without expecting a return…He should wait for his time that people could shout that he really deserves the it.

God is the one who gave the us talent. But when we get to heaven, God will not ask how many titles or awards we got on earth… its still our heart that matters.

Both Caparas and Alvarez are not qualified for their honor bec:

    1. Their names where never in the selection process for national Artist.

    2. They where only selected because of presidential priviledge. Shame on the president for her brazen decision that she can add and subtract people from the list.

    3. Delikadesa na lang po if the roster of national artist dont see both of you within their ranking you should question yourself na lang kung you are really deserving

    4. The National Artist award is not given when your old or dying or dead. FYI, even if your old or dying or dead, if you dont deserve you should not expect that they give it to you. Presumptuous naman po kayo. Why not let the award body give you the award and not you be fighting for it.

I know that he have worked hard on his projects and stories. He is also known maybe by more people than the other national artists. But his works do not show high standards of artistry. I don’t even know if one of his movies are critically acclaimed. His works won’t be compared to that of Brocka’s and Bernal’s. It’s a light years away from “Himala” and needless to say of other indie films.

The only factor that made him National Artist is his ties to the present administration. An administration that has tainted credibility and integrity. They are both shame of the Filipino race.

pakapalan ng mukha! caparas who does not know how to illustrate the characters of his stories. when asked by jessica soho to draw he drew just an ordinary caricature just to prove he knows how to draw. stupidity in the finest! if caparas is really the illustrator he could have drawn the panday figure which is his character trademark, like shultz when asked if he is really the ‘peanuts’ illustrator he drew charlie brown with ease.
caparas thinks he is singled-out because he is not ‘learned.’ caparas thinks he is singled-out because he is poor( he has a house in ayala alabang,) that he comes from lowly beginnings, and that his foot was shot one time. His senseless ramblings and witless innuendos reflect on the stupidity of the man. He is so stupid he can’t get it right in whatever hemisphere of his brain that he is not qualified as a visual artist. Caparas is so pathetic. He even has to fight it out tongue for tongue of his ‘accomplishments.’ For his information and those of his ilk, his so-called”accomplishments’ are ‘basura.’ His by-word is always ‘masa’ and ‘para sa masa,’ even though his name is not Joseph. I am really angry at what’s happening in this national artist awards, ‘aatakihin na naman ako ng alcoholism ko!’
And you, Guidote-Alvarez! You think i will spare you of my ire? You are like caparas, only two levels high. You know how to speak English and siguro may pinag-aralan ka naman. It does not mean that when you have established a theater company and your ‘bukang-bibig’ is theater, you are qualified as National Artist for Theater. Have shame! ( That’s English, so you’ll understand it easily.) You are a patron of theater but not an artist! You host a theater program, you interview theater artists, you produce theater production but you are not the artist.
This is an explanation your brain will easily understand, Guidote-Alvarez. You are an officer of the award given body. It is always a rule to exempt officers and staff and even relatives of the awarding body in every contest. Up to the 2nd consanguinity relationship, if you are to be strict about it.
To caparas, ‘ang kapal ng mukha mo!’; to guidote, ‘your face is thick!’
I cannot blame you two, by 2010 your patroness GMA will be kicked out of the office for good. Pathetic.
