Online Petition Against Carlo J. Caparas National Artist Naming

no-to-carlo-caparasLast Thursday saw the naming of new National Artists, among them Carlo J. Caparas. Reaction varied from disbelief to shock, the latter represented by an online petition attempting to gather enough names to protest Caparas’ appointment.

The petition, found here, criticizes the naming of Carlo J. Caparas as a National Artist for Visual Arts and Film. While it recognizes “the work and accomplishments of Caparas within the comic book industry as well as television and film, the petition also wonders how “someone who has made a living exploiting the lowest common denominator in films” was able to get the honor.

The petition also points out Caparas’ apparent lack of Visual Arts contribution, asserting that he was a comic writer, not an illustrator as covered under the guidelines in naming a National Artist for the Visual Arts.

This online drive also voices a common argument against Caparas’ appointment, a particular point that also makes critics of President GMA froth in the mouth:

Our objection and resolve are strengthened by news that have recently come to light that Carlo J. Caparas did not go through the rigorous selection and assesment process of the National Artists voting board. Carlo J. Caparas is a SNAG, or “Singit National Artist ni Gloria”. It is through this Presidential insertion process that a person who is not qualified to be National Artist manages to be one.

What do you think? Personally, I’m not that familiar with the works of Caparas—and many other local artists. Though I’m sure his reputation as the director of sensationally-titled films like Lipa Arandia Massacre (Lord Deliver Us from Evil)—and the naming of executive director of the commission selecting National Artists as a National Artist—definitely doesn’t help his case.

“National artists are given medallion and citation. They will also receive a lifetime emolument and material and physical benefits like cash award, a monthly pension, medical and hospitalization benefits.

The awardees will likewise receive life insurance coverage, arrangement and expenses for a state funeral, a place of honor, in line with protocular precedence, at national state functions, and recognition at cultural events. Kapal mo CJC

im an artist, and this is indeed a huge insult, us creators should look up to the national artist award for it holds greatness, now it lacks integrity, it is a great wonder how this happened when there are technicalities, rules to be even nominated, how can they just twist the guidelines…it is scary. and a big stab on the Philippine art scene for our standards degraded itself, shattering real art.
Nakakasuka.

I heard the news three days ago. ‘Kala ko nomination lang, nanalo na pala! Grabe!
Mahilig ako manood ng pelikula at isang pelikula ni caparas ang sinubukan ko panoorin noon and after watching the film sabi ko kahit kelan ‘di na muling susubok manood ng movie n’ya. Pangit.

we are really quite shocked. Imagine this Carlo J Caparas produced an Indie film directed by direk Toto . Its a trilogy, with great artists and even Manny Pacquiao is one of the artist for one segment. after the 8 day shoot, this Carlo Caparas, did not pay a large amount for his rentals for lights and cameras. Without any reason given to us, he just crossed out equipment and even payments to the crew (pack up and overtime pays). How can a guy like this be a National Artist. We are quite shocked.

I heard the news today on Radio.
I can’t believe how he reacted over the accusations about him for taking the National Artist Award. Man that Guy is very defensive. He even accused Karen Davila as “hear say” reporters. lol

BTW, your films have scanty vocabulary, wrong grammar, shameful syntax, but absolutely effective exploitation techniques and AUDIENCE ABUSE. SIGH.

Alam niyo yung pagpag?
Carlo Caparas is the NCCA version of pagpag.

DO NOT POLUTE/INFECT the arts!

Mr. Carlo J…. people would have respected you more… even in death… if you had refused the award gracefully… you would have been remembered as: “The One who stood up for the ARTS… refused a National Award… and became a REAL NATIONAL ARTIST/HERO for The ARTS in the real sense.”
Pero sa pag tanggap mo ng award… naging isa kang “predictable” na garapal… and you know this… kaya idaan mo nalang sa “AWA”… keep mentioning that galing ka sa MASA, and that nakapagbigay ka ng TRABAHO sa mga tao…. which is good and NOBLE i agree, pero not a NATIONAL ARTIST issue… so stop it… pero it’s too late… now you will be known forever as: “The ONE who didn’t deserve it. ”

As a visual artist, I agree that CJC should not get the award. You can’t possibly be a Visual Artist if you’re just a writer. I cannot possibly look up to the award for its greatness if a writer won it. He doesn’t even pay for rental equipment. Where’s the integrity in THAT?! He is cheapening the prestigious award and I, for one, cannot accept that he polute/infect arts.

I remember the Film Fest scandal from this event. Something wrong is happening here.
