The Facebook Setting You Have to Change

facebook-hot-singles-2To make a long story short, you should set your account’s “Appearance in Facebook ads” setting to “No One”. This prevents a Facebook ad from using your avatar to give itself a personal touch. Here’s what could happen to you if you don’t change this setting as recommended.

Basically, Cheryl Smith found herself looking at a Facebook ad that advertised “hot singles”—with her own picture the star attraction:

Helpfully, Cheryl Smith listed down what steps to take to avoid this awkward situation:

If you don’t want to show up in your friends’ FaceBook ads, go to:

  1. Settings
  2. Privacy
  3. News Feed and Wall
  4. Click on “Facebook Ads”
  5. In the “Appearance in Facebook Ads” box, click “no one” (unless, of course, you actually want to tell your spouse to check out hot singles)

Thanks Cheryl!

Thanks Rico, for running this story. I’ve since learned that a third party app developer is the one responsible, rather than Facebook directly. The heavy traffic spike has caused me hosting problems and I’ve been unable to update the post.

Nonetheless, the setting is still a good one to change.
