Please Improve Your Software Nokia

nokia-ovi-suiteRunning the Ovi Suite installer of the Nokia N97, it’s clear that Nokia’s PC software could use improvement. A lot of improvement.

At first glance, it’s nice to see the installer provide the user with some options during setup. Install Nokia Photos? Leave out Nokia Music? But in hindsight, this approach—separating the various facilities into different applications—does not work. Not only does it come off as cumbersome (What, I have to install all of this?!), it lets users potentially miss out on functionality required to maximize their phones.

So the first improvement Nokia needs to implement is to integrate everything into one neat package. Let one program manage connections with compatible Nokia phones, be responsible for syncing media, info, and other content, and allow access to Nokia’s Ovi.

This integration keeps everything simple and accessible, and provides more incentive for people to switch to Nokia’s software. People definitely like using one app to do many things, especially if it does those things really well.

Another thing Nokia should work on is the responsiveness of its software. Most of the manufacturer’s phones are known for immediately responding to user input, with the higher-end models (like the N97) enjoying an improving record. Now it’s time to concentrate on making things faster on the PC.

Nokia’s desktop software should launch more quickly, especially since it encourage users to set it to start when Windows loads. There’s no need to load the whole she-bang immediately, just the parts needed to sync data with the phone (and you can load stuff in the background). Forget about giving your software distinctive visuals—they use memory and resources unnecessarily.

It’s clear Nokia wants more people to use its desktop applications, which eventually lead to the manufacturer’s Ovi Suite of online services. For that to happen though, the software needs to be simple, straightforward, integrated, and fast.
