The Sony Ericsson Laptop Hoax
I’ve received from at least three friends an email with the subject line “Free Laptop From Sony Ericsson”. It basically promises those who forward the email a free laptop, and contains this image:

The text reads:
Our main competitor, Nokia, is giving free mobile phones away on the Internet. Here at Ericsson we want to counter their offer. So we are giving our newest WAP-phones away as well.
All you have to do, is to forward this message to 8 friends. After two weeks delivery time, you will receive a Ericsson T18. If you forward it to 20 friends, you will receive the brand new Ericsson R320 WAP-phone. Just remember to send a copy to Anna.Swelund@ericsson.com – that is the only way we can see, that you forwarded the message.
Watch out, dear readers! Rely on your common sense:
- Does Sony Ericsson sell SE-branded laptops?
- If the “promotion” were true, how would Sony Ericsson keep track of who really sent 8 or 20 emails?
In any case, Hoax Slayer received word of this scam way back in March 2007. The site said it best: “No legitimate company is likely to engage in such a haphazard and uncontrollable method of promoting their products.”
So, if you receive such an email, warn the person who sent it to you that it is a scam. It’s so easy to fall for offers that sound too good to be true—God knows that’s happened to me several times. But thanks to the internet, it’s easier than ever to find out about these.
