Bicolano Contributions to Technology in the Philippines

The Bicol region in Southern Luzon—famous for Mayon Volcano and as the birthplace of various local celebrities—has its own contributions to Technology in the Philippines:
- You’ve got Ateneo de Naga University, the first Philippine University to offer Computer Animation as a course. Various alumni enjoy industry-standard expertise, doing outsourced for work for companies like Disney. Less stellar achievements include production work for Super Noypi.
- You’ve got a Bicolano recently promoted to Director Global IT Business Solutions of DHL Express. Bob Pandes is now responsible for part of the company’s IT operations, and is currently based in Bonn, Germany.
- MangoRED, that pair of photographers most famous doing Doug Kramer and Chesca Garcia’s pre-nups, are from Naga.
- And who can forget Bicolano Rico Zuñiga, famous for his Tongits app? He’s currently working to bring his relatively popular creation to the iPhone platform.
- Last but not least, Caramoan. I wished I already had a camera when I was there a few years ago, since the peninsula features lots of wallpaper opportunities. Awesome scenery always makes great wallpapers for any kind of gadget.
Have I missed anything? Feel free to share by leaving an opinion below.
(Disclaimer: I studied and graduated from Ateneo de Naga University. And yes, I did study Computer Animation, but didn’t have the determination nor talent to turn it into a career)
