In Memory of harley_quinn, the Plurk User With Infinite Karma

The story of Plurk user harley_quinn, a Filipina who was based in Switzerland, is both sad yet uplifting at the same time.

Hazel Danielle Santos happily shared on Plurk that she got engaged. Most unfortunately, she was involved in a fatal car accident—on the way home from her engagement party.

But, Hazel wasn’t forgotten by her friends on Plurk. After receiving word of her untimely death, Plurk user thegreatest made an impassioned plea on Get Satisfaction, a customer service community site that allowed direct access to the people managing Plurk:

I know this is a long shot, but we have a plurker who just recently passed away. She recently got engaged (and even plurked about it), but died on her way home from the engagement party in a car accident. Her friends (all plurkers) are very broken up about it and it is heartbreaking to see her plurk karma [a rating system that represents how much a user participates] slowly trickle down. We were wondering if you can somehow freeze it, so we can remember her the way she was through her plurks. Thanks.

Amir Salihefendi, apparently Plurk’s lead developer, promptly answered:

We are really sorry to hear about this and our condolence goes to her friends and family.

We have stalled her karma drops and have given her a karma of infinity. May she rest in peace :’(

Visit harley_quinn’s Plurk page, and you’ll see that Amir kept his word. For long as Plurk survives, harley_quinn’s karma rating will literally be eternal, a remembrance of her presence online.

It was indeed very nice of the Plurk team to give her infinite karma. Now we can all remember her as the happy Hazel – as she always was.

I miss her so much and was glad to be her friend even for a short period of time. No worries though because I know she’s in a better place – maybe waiting for our plurks.

It was really nice of the Plurk team to give her infinite karma. I miss her, her plurks and her wit. If there’s anything that she has taught me by being her friend, it is to live life to the fullest and see the happiness in everything – even if your shoes don’t match with your outfit (our inside joke).

May God bless her soul and the others she left bereaved.
