When Will the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic Reach the Philippines?

See what happened when Nokia officially launched the phone here in the Philippines

To make a long story short, within the first quarter of next year.

Last Friday in Singapore, Nokia launched the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic. Comparisons to the iPhone are inevitable, thanks to the 5800’s large screen and touch-sensitive controls.

But 5800 is definitely different. This isn’t only due to the features—which are numerous enough to make this phone Nokia’s new “do-it-all” flagship—but the aggressive pricing and bundled extras as well. Continue to see demo videos.

Specs

  • A 640 x 360 (16:9) 3.2″ 16-million color display
  • the Symbian S60 OS, 5th Edition
  • An accelerometer for auto screen rotation
  • A 3.2 megapixel camera with Carl-Zeiss lens dual LED flash
  • WiFi (b/g)
  • Bluetooth 2.0
  • HSDPA
  • GPS
  • a 3.5mm jack for audio and video output (includes TV-out!)
  • 140MB of internal memory
  • a microSD slot that accepts up to 16GB (SDHC)
  • 1320mAh of battery power via the Nokia BL-5J
  • a length of 115mm, width of 52mm, thickness of 14.55mm, and a weight of 104 grams

Bundled Extras

On top of that, Nokia promises to bundle an 8GB microSD with each phone, on top of the included extra pen stylus, plectrum (a stylus alternative shaped like a guitar pick), headset, carrying case, portable stand, video out cable, and of course charger. The Finns made sure to make me remember that this phone will play music for 35 hours straight.

How much would you pay for that? With a launch price of 279 euros in the UK, Nokia has a huge opportunity to keep the price down when this phone reaches the Philippines. Let’s hope the price doesn’t go higher than P20,000!

Touch-Sensitive Controls

In any case, the only issue I have so far with this phone (from a half-an-hour usage session) are the lack of physical buttons. Nokia has finally jumped on the touch-screen bandwagon, and while that’s a welcome change for some people, not everyone is really into tapping out letters on a virtual QWERTY keyboard. At least Nokia still lets you enter text with one hand, via a touch-sensitive numeric keypad.

I do hope it doesn’t go over Php20k – that’s my personal limit for phones in general.

It’s really impossible that price will not exceed 20k.. The N95 8GB is still 24+++.
contrast with the 5800’s feature and all i think, it’ll be roughly 30-40k. . .

At a glace, it almost looks “identical” to the HTC touch HD (without the high definition thingy).

Phoebe: Now I’m torn between the E71 and this phone :P

sultanjr and Dann: The price had better not go above 25k. I mean, Nokia’s reps made it clear that they’re orienting this phone for the youth market.

Again, the 5800’s priced at around 280 euros in the UK, which is 18k in pesos. It would really be a bad movie if Nokia priced this phone over P25k, despite the complete feature set.

Tzel: Would you believe one of the journalists who went to SG with me was test-driving one? The HTC Touch HD is bigger and heavier than the 5800.

    I’m gonna get me one!!!

Tried the Samsung touchscreen, eck, it’s windows based!

If this phone is for the youth as Nokia stated, then I don’t think it will be priced beyond 20k. Yey for me! Can’t wait :)

Unfortunately, I recommend everyone to pass on this, and wait for the first N-Series touch phone. It does have a higher resolution screen, but it’s tiny! And the screen isn’t as responsive as I had hoped for. I’d go for the E71, HTC Touch HD, or even the iPhone instead of this one.
