Beware of Two-Way Mirrors!

Isn’t it great how technology provides Filipinos with sensible advice? Multiply user sharmskee asks her fellow women to check mirrors in dressing rooms, to see if they’re really one-way:
Place the tip of your fingernail against the reflective surface. If there is a GAP between your fingernail and the image of the nail, then it is a GENUINE mirror. However, if your fingernail DIRECTLY TOUCHES the image of your nail, then BEWARE, FOR IT IS A 2-WAY MIRROR! ‘No Space, Leave the Place’. So remember, every time you see a Mirror, do the ‘fingernail test.’ It doesn’t cost you anything.
Remember: ‘No Space, Leave the Place’.
A great way to protect yourself from any maniacs eagerly watching you undress (or recording the act) through a two-way mirror.

The fingernail test only really tells you how if the mirror is front or back coated (though that usually is a clue), and if it’s back-coated, how thick the glass is.
According to Snopes.com (you know, that site that deals the dirt on urban legends), you should try “pressing your eyes up against the mirror and cupping your hands around them (to block out the light from the room you’re in): if you’re truly dealing with a transparent mirror, you should be able to see at least a little something of the open area behind it. Also, rapping on the mirror should provide an aural clue: ordinary mirrors have backings and are usually placed against walls, so rapping on them will generally produce dull thuds; transparent mirrors and set into walls with open areas behind them, so rapping on them should produce much more open, hollow sounds. These methods of detection are more reliable than the fingernail test.”
