What’s Up With Your Site PBA?

waaaaahhh!

Have you visited pba.ph? The website of the Philippine Basketball Association isn’t exactly the resource for diehard PBA fans.

It’s not about the ugly header, which shows that whoever’s managing the site doesn’t even know how to optimize images for use on a website. It’s also not about the confusing layout, which seems to place more importance on third-party advertisements than on what’s happening in the PBA. It’s not even about the plain visuals, which looks like they were made in a last-minute frenzy.

Lack of Prompt Updates

No, what the official PBA website really lacks are timely updates. For instance, we are writing this just after Game 6 of the 2008 Smart Fiesta Conference finals. Chris Alexander, the import player for Barangay Ginebra, had a monster performance, scoring 37 points and grabbing 24 rebounds!

Yet when we checked the PBA website a few hours after the game, there was still no mention of Game 6, no indication of Alexander’s massive contribution to his team’s victory, and no announcement regarding the upcoming Game 7 (which is scheduled for this Wednesday evening).

The Information is All There

Isn’t it possible to assign someone to write about a PBA game immediately after it ends? It doesn’t even have to be a complete article; that can come later, while a brief recap of the highlights is probably enough to satisfy anyone wondering what happened during the game.

And what about the game stats? It should be easy for someone to encode the game’s complete statistics to display on the website, even if the scorers still use paper booklets to keep track of all the players’ points, assists, rebounds, fouls, etc.

A Chance to be Important to Filipinos

Think about it: the PBA is in a great position. They are the league, which means they have first dibs on information—what’s happened in the latest games—that’s relevant to a lot of Filipinos. Why can’t they maximize this advantage, and make the info available on their website first, instead of letting their fans find out through next morning’s newspaper, or on another website?

If the PBA works hard to provide the latest game info on their own website, then it will become more relevant to their target audience. Isn’t relevance to Filipino basketball fans something the PBA really desires?

All the things you’ve listed were all on target. The website is a poor represantation of the country’s favorite pastime.

bat ba hindi palitan o baguhin..marami namang magaling jan..make the PBA website more interactive, interesting and fun for the people.
