Update: Globe has announced new prices for its postpaid plans.
Update: Globe Telecom has slashed the price of an iPhone 3G bought through a prepaid plan by P4,300 for the 8GB model, and P5,000 for the 16GB variant.
The long wait’s over folks. Today Globe announced the iPhone 3G plan pricing for the Philippines, also setting the official release date for this August 22.
The iPhone 3G will be available with a variety of two-year lock-in contracts (with monthly payments ranging from P1,599 to P4,999 a month) and with prepaid kits (P41,899 for the 8GB model, P48,899 for the 16). For post-paid plans, there’s also a flat fee for the phone itself, dependent on which plan future customers sign up. Continue reading for a quick summary.
- Plan 1599 (100 mins and 350 texts free) – P16,800 for the 8GB model, P22,300 for the 16GB variant.
- Plan 2199 (210 mins and 350 texts) – P14,600 / P20,000
- Plan 3299 (350 mins and 450 texts) – P12,300 / P17,800
- Plan 3999 (500 mins and 550 texts) – P5,600 / P11,000
- Plan 4999 (750 mins and 650 texts) – FREE / P5,500
Each plan also has a corresponding amount of free mobile internet hours, through Globe’s 3G and WiFi hotspot services. But according to the site guy Marco Palinar, it’s not enough:
This is ridiculous. Being a 3rd world country is no excuse for Globe to deny us unlimited data rates at very reasonable prices. I just don’t see how providing data here is costing globe much more than say AT&T that they have to put a stupid cap on it. I mean seriously I love everything Apple but Globe is just plain robbing us blind. What use is a next generation internet platform if you dole out internet access in minutes? What the hell is this the 90’s? This is laughable. Feels like I’m getting “Free 300 hours of Internet Access” from those edsamail cd’s way back then.
A pretty passionate reaction, which somehow is typical when an Apple product is the topic of discussion. Personally, we find the plans and unit prices pretty expensive. Depending on the plan taken, iPhone 3G (16GB model) customers can expect to pay the following over two years:
- Plan 1599: P60,676
- Plan 2199: P70,576
- Plan 3299: P90,176
- Plan 3999: P106,976
- Plan 4999: P125,476
What do you think folks? Is the iPhone 3G worth the steep financial commitment? To be fair though, Globe also commits customers to the same amounts with high-end phones from other brands. Details on the plans featured are available here.

I wonder how the pricing compares to having jailbroken iphone 3gs found in the gray market

The thing is, the Philippines is one of those countries where airtime is cheap. Now Globe is packaging a subscription plan for iPhone that costs tenfold than any regular plan. Comparing this to AT&T, you might even say that AT&T’s rates are a nickel-dime deal compared to what Globe has done. The iPhone is a data platform. Globe is plain ridiculous.

Yeah, what happened to Apple’s $199 global max (with contract) promise?
As for the prepaid kit, terribly overpriced. We can just buy a non-contracted one from AT&T (I have relatives from the states, so shipping isn’t a problem) for much less than PhP40k.

The $199 I’m talking about btw is the supposed subsidized phone price (according to Apple).

Well, you pay for the after sales support which you cannot avail if you buy in the gray market. It’s “to each his own” actually.

i think this is a very wrong move for globe…with their biggest competition being “greenhills” i can just buy my iPhone 3G in US for less than 10K and have it jailbroken here for another 1K…
40K…isnt worth it…did the people in GLOBE ever had their market research???…geezzz…wrong move for globe!

“Apple may restrict service to the country where Apple or its authorized distributors originally
sold the hardware product.”
- taken from iPhone warranty terms and conditions.
Maybe this is what we are going to pay for?

Ridiculous! For the unsubsidized price of the 8gb model I can get two Nokia E71s.
