Technology in the Philippines: Astig at Olats

Astig: Pilipinas Teleserv Inc. The Filipino company is responsible for the DFA Passport Direct, NSO Helpline Plus, and POEA OEC Delivery Service services. Through the use of contact center and internet technology, as well as an efficient delivery system, the three services provide badly needed documentation for thousands of Filipinos, all while saving them from long lines and other bureaucratic hassles. Teleserv also handles online orders taken from 8mcdo.com.
We’ve been to the center of their contact center operations, located somewhere near Ayala Bridge in one of Metro Manila’s industrial districts. Despite the decidedly dilapidated surroundings, the office of Pilipinas Teleserv looked as professional as the services they provide.
Olats: SSS Online Inquiry System. At 436 opinions and counting, much has been said about the SSS online inquiry—or rather, it’s continuing failure since May 2008. We’ve emailed the government bureaucracy multiple times, but apparently they haven’t been receiving our requests for some sor of explanation. Or worse, do they even care? Until it broke down, the SSS online inquiry system has helped Filipinos easily check their social security accounts online, and gather data crucial to their job applications and future plans.
Two examples of Technology in the Philippines. One works for the benefit of Filipinos, while another continues to cause frustration and irritation for its hopeful customers.

Pilipinas Teleserv is also responsible in extending the number of days to get your passport renewed. In the past, an OFW in a short 2-week vacation can renew his passport in less than a week. Today, it could take you more than 3 weeks. Thanks to Pilipinas Teleserv who’s enjoying priority schedules in the DFA. The DFA also designed an appointment system in favor of this greedy company, so that passport processing will take so many days to keep in phase with Teleserv’s slow process. DFA should stop implementing procedure in favor of Teleserv. Teleserv should keep up with the natural process of the DFA, not slow them down. I wonder if NSO also slowed down their process in favor to Teleserv, if anybody observed this change in NSO, please let the madlang people know.
