So Who Created the Nokia Tune?

Congratulations to yesterday’s winners, readers “mindless”, Romark, Josh, and Ricardo. You’ve all won tickets to screenings of Batman: The Dark Knight tomorrow and on Friday! Again, thank you very much to Nokia Philippines for providing the tickets!

Anyways, the answer to yesterday’s question (”Who created the composition that became the basis for the default ring tone on Nokia phones?”) is Francisco Tárrega.

Francisco Tárrega was a Spanish composer and guitarist. He was responsible for turning the guitar into a recital instrument, making it attain the same status as the piano and other “classic” instruments. One of his pieces, Gran Vals, was the basis for the Nokia tune. Check it out here (MIDI file).

“In 1993 Anssi Vanjoki, Executive Vice President of Nokia, brought the whole Gran Vals for Lauri Kivinen (now Head of Corporate Affairs) and together they selected the excerpt that became ‘Nokia tune’” -Wikipedia
