Outsourced Copyediting: A New Opportunity for the Philippines?

Business Week challenges the widely-held generalization that Indians suffer from poor English. Mindworks, a company based in India, takes care of the “dirty jobs” in the print media industry, handling copyediting and layouting for at least eight publications in the US. This allows their clients to concentrate on reporting and writing.
Perfect for the Philippines?
The same reason why Filipinos present their country as suitable for contact center operations—the supposed local English proficiency—may also mean that outsourced copyediting will work here.
Unfortunately, in our opinion, it remains to be seen if enough Filipinos are skilled in editing English, which requires a significantly different skill set and ability than conversing in that language.
Our growing concern about the state of education of the Philippines also adds to our doubt. We also doubt that a crash course in grammar and editing can effectively create the kind of labor an outsourced copyediting company requires.
Growing Demand
A primary reason why Mindworks has managed to attract enough clients is the diminishing fortunes of publications in the US, as advertisers—a significant source of income—switch their spending to online media.
Which means that the market for outsourced copyediting will definitely grow, as more print media companies seek to lower costs through outsourcing. Is this relatively new field a good fit for our supposed competence in American English? Will our country be able to tap this opportunity?
