Why Businesses Should Secure Their Names Online

If you were looking for more information on Starbucks in the Philippines, a logical choice would be to visit starbucks.ph and starbucks.com.ph. After all, the .ph domain was designed for use by Filipinos, a fact that the average local surfer is aware of.

That’s exactly what a certain “Timothy Warden”, with a given address of P. O. Box 75
San Fernando, La Union PH 2500 (according to the domains’ WhoIs info), has taken advantage of.

Rustan Coffee Corporation, the local Starbucks franchise holder, does own starbucks.net.ph. But, judging from the comments on starbucks.ph, it’s clear that Mr. Warden’s domains receive more traffic. After all, typing “starbucks.ph” is a lot easier than entering “starbucks.net.ph”.

This is perhaps another example of a business risking the loss of control of its name online. Just like what probably happened to Playboy Philippines.

That’s because Tim used to own an ISP in La Union (North Luzon) before in 1996 I think. Used to hang a lot in their office when I was 14!
