Control Your Nokia Cell Phone Through Your Browser

Nokia Beta Labs (nokia.com/betalabs) features the manufacturer’s latest projects. And perhaps the most interesting of these is Nokia PC Phone, which is basically software that lets users control their Nokia phones through their browsers, using their data cables or Bluetooth:
You can communicate by using Nokia PC Phone with your friends and family even though they don’t have the Nokia PC Phone themselves. Your friends are not able to tell the difference whether you are using the Nokia PC Phone or not, because your calls and text messages are actually made from your own Nokia phone.

Technograph recently downloaded Nokia PC Phone (nokia.com/betalabs/pcphone) and put it through its paces. First, we made sure our test laptop and phone (a Nokia N81 8GB) were Bluetooth capable. Installing the software went without a hitch, though it required closing all browsers and a restart. After pairing the phone and the laptop, we had problems running Nokia PC Phone on Firefox, so we opted to use Internet Explorer instead.
We were able to view the phone’s messages and call log, and even manage the contacts themselves. Incoming calls were announced through a pop-up on the computer, with buttons allowing the user to answer or reject the call, and quickly send an SMS to the caller. Despite the use of Bluetooth, we spent the whole day connected to the phone at no significant cost to its battery life.
Unfortunately, as a beta, Nokia PC Phone has some bugs. The program’s lack of responsiveness makes it practically impossible to send and receive text messages for instance. Here’s to hoping that Nokia will perfect Nokia PC Phone soon. It’s a great utility that will make life a little easier for Nokia smartphone users—but only when it is fully functional.
