A Public Service Reminder: Don’t Forget About Your Bluetooth Connections!

bluetooth.gifA pretty funny thing happened while we were testing out the Nokia 5310 Xpress Music we received from Nokia Philippines (along with the Nokia Advanced Headphones HS-62 we recently reviewed). One of us was copying files to the phone from a laptop, via Bluetooth.

Since the transfer would take some time, our tester plugged in some headphones, set the phone to play some music, pocketed it, and went back to work.

Bluetooth isn’t exactly the fastest way to exchange information between gadgets, but it doesn’t require hooking up messy wires. The most powerful Bluetooth devices can transfer data at a distance of up to a hundred meters, but the effective range is lessened by the presence of walls and other obstacles.

A few minutes later, he stood up and walked to the CR on the other side of the office floor—with the phone still in his pocket. As he neared the door, the music suddenly stopped, and a tone sounded in the headphones. The surprised user took out the phone and saw “File transfer failed.” Obviously, he had walked too far from the laptop, cutting the Bluetooth connection.

So remember folks: whether you’re using Bluetooth to transfer files, control gadgets without wires, or send sound to a hands-free headset, don’t forget to keep everything close to each other!
