Will Pep.ph’s Success Lead to a Summit-GMA Partnership?

pep-screenshot.jpg

In a span of only one year, the Philippine Entertainment Portal (pep.ph) has managed to acquire a significant readership, according to Alexa. Traffic has increased by 23% over the last three months, as PEP has attracted visitors from the Philippines and OFWs from a variety of other countries, all obviously keeping tabs on the latest Filipino gossip developments.

Technograph has learned that PEP is a joint venture between Yes!, a publication of Summit Media, and GMA 7. It seems that the combined resources of the popular magazine and the TV network have managed to produce a highly trafficked site that publishes the latest chismis as it becomes known, not during the next printing run or editing session.

PEP’s track record of quickly increasing traffic makes us wonder: have Summit and GMA found a potential partner in each other? Summit Media already maintains websites for some of their more popular magazines, while GMA 7 was quick to recover from the split with Inquirer through gmanews.tv.

Could a Summit-GMA partnership succeed where Inq7.net failed?

I’m always wary of offline media partnerships online. Serving niches is the key to success online, and offline media partnerships often become too unwieldy to serve niches. It happened six years ago with Inq7, and it’s happening today with NBC/Fox Hulu.

    Let’s see what happens.

If Summit and GMA do pursue a closer collaboration, a driving force will probably be the need to be perceived as keeping with the times. As more “traditional” media companies realize that the Internet is the future, they will consider partnerships to their “new” counterparts. Some may rush into things without thoughtful consideration, but only time will tell and nothing is more clear than hindsight.

if gma backstabbed inquirer before, they can do it to summit, as well…

Hi, it’s a known fact that GMA and Summit are solidifying their partnership with a few more projects together. We’re launching SPOT, an social networking city guide and a few more passion sites–one based on food, one based on fashion and style, and a few others.

Mike, at the rate we’re moving, I haven’t really felt any of the unwieldiness you mentioned. In fact, we’re moving at such a dizzying pace, I am looking forward to this Xmas break to get some rest.

Memnoch, who are you? We’ve been happy with GMA so far. Of course, there’s always two sides to a story and if you hurl accusations like that, you may want to say who you are. It’s easy to destroy reputations on the web. Meanwhile, I’ve seen partnerships fall apart in my day. Getting into a partnership can be a wrong move and that’s why both parties have to work on the relationship and nurture it. It’s like a marriage. Corny, but true. If Memnoch is your real name, I apologize for the criticism

Good to hear business is so brisk, Lisa. Let’s hope it doesn’t hit any offline media brick walls.

Like I said, let’s see what happens. Happy holidays!

Techno, as far as I’ve seen, traditional media companies drag down their new counterparts. Mammals chained to dinosaurs get crushed.

    Hi Mike,

I’m just a little curious, but could you give a specific example of traditional media companies that have “dragged down their new counterparts”?

The way I see things, an established media company that dips its toe into online waters will do good for the industry as a whole. Why is this so? Advertisers with a traditional mindset will open their eyes that yes, online media definitely is a big part of the future.

Correct me I’m wrong but the article above talks about NBC and FOX, which are both in TV. It’s like saying ABS-CBN is working with GMA 7 if I were to use the same argument here.
